Delivery Remainder and End Inventory functionality

Ways to End the Inventory and Delivery Remainder in Sales Order

Method 1: Manually Adjust Sales Order Line

You can set the Deliver Now quantity to match the actual shipped quantity and remove the remainder.

Steps:

  1. Go to Sales and marketing > Sales orders > All sales orders

  2. Open the Sales Order

  3. Go to the Lines section

  4. Select the sales line you want to close

  5. In the Line details, go to the Quantity tab

  6. Update:

    • Deliver remainder → Set it to 0

    • Picked or Deliver now → Set to actual quantity (if needed)

This action will "end" the line — no more shipments will be expected.

Method 2: Use the “Deliver remainder” Function

If you're in the shipping or delivery stage:

Steps:

  1. Go to the Sales Order

  2. Click Update line > Deliver remainder

  3. The system will prompt you to set the delivery remainder to 0

  4. Confirm, and the line is effectively closed

This is helpful if you've shipped part of the line and want to cancel the rest.

Method 3: Cancel the Remaining Quantity

You can cancel the remaining quantity if no picking or shipment has occurred:

Steps:

  1. On the sales line, click Functions > Cancel

  2. Enter the reason (optional)

  3. The system updates the deliver remainder to zero

B) End Inventory Application:

In Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations (D365FO), the “End inventory” functionality on an Output Order is used to manually close the remaining quantity that has not been picked, shipped, or processed — essentially signaling that the remaining inventory will not be processed, and the system should consider the output order completed.

This function is typically used in:

  • Warehouse Management-enabled environments

  • Output orders for sales, transfers, or production that are partially fulfilled

  • Situations where the remaining quantity cannot or should not be picked or shipped

How to Use "End Inventory" on an Output Order

🔹 Step-by-Step:

  1. Go to:
Warehouse management > Outbound orders > Output orders

  2. Select the Output Order you want to close

  3. In the action pane, go to:
    Inventory > End inventory

  4. Confirm the dialog:

    • It will show the remaining quantity to be ended

    • You can optionally add a reason code (if configured)

  5. Click OK

Result:

  • Output order status will change to Ended

  • The related inventory transactions will be updated

  • No further picking or shipping actions will be allowed for that order

  • Reservations are released for the canceled remainder

When Should You Use It?

  • Customer cancels the remainder of a sales order line

  • Items are damaged or unavailable and will not be replaced

  • Transfer order or production cannot proceed with remaining quantity

  • You’re cleaning up stuck or partial output orders in the system

Note1:  If the sales order is picked less in the picking list and/or picklist registration. First we need to perform the end inventory and then the delivery remainder cancel.

Note2: If the partially qty is received where the picked and registration are same, the delivery remainder cancel option is sufficient to close the order.
